Regional Suites of Mycorrhiza
Provide a Low-Cost, Water-Thrifty Landscape

© 2006 Wendy Dager

According to the Web site of ReForestation Technologies (RTI), "Mycorrhizal fungi are the key organism that ties plant roots to the soil. Well-colonized plants have increased access to moisture and nutrients, stronger immune systems and healthier root zone conditions." RTI's species have been selected for both growth response and regional adaptability, which why S&S Seeds is pleased to offer its customers three new Regional Suites of Mycorrhiza: AM 120 Coastal Suite, AM 120 Desert Suite, and AM 120 Basin & High Plains Suite, along with the standard AM 120 we've stocked for nearly a decade.

The mycorrhizal fungi grow in the plant's root cells or as a root sheath. The fungus' filaments grow outward from the roots, penetrating the surrounding soil. The roots' reach is extended, sometimes by as much as 1,000 times the length of the entire plant root system. These fungal extensions transport nutrients from the surrounding soil back to the host plant. Mycorrhizae aid in the production of "glomalin" or "soil glue" that improves soil drainage, increases resistance to wind and water erosion, and improves the health of the rhizosphere to promote greater and more diverse populations of native flora and fauna.

Since mycorrhizal fungi can be lost through soil sterilization, pesticide, and fungicide use, as well as flooding, construction grading and erosion, S&S Seeds' Paul Albright recommends AM 120 to help restore and reclaim the land by improving the survival of most native trees, shrubs and grasses. AM 120 provides the mycorrhizal fungi that mines and absorbs moisture and nutrients from areas beyond the ends of the root tips.

A high rate of infectivity, excellent shelf life and easy flow properties make AM 120 the most effective and most specified mycorrhizal inoculum in the country. To add an extra dimension of biology to your job site, order any of these varieties of RTI's AM 120 by calling S&S Seeds at (805) 684-0436 or visiting our Web site, http://www.ssseeds.com.
